Texture is such a complex subject. Quite literally there are so many layers to it. Texture is a big part of life. The more you think about it, the more it makes sense. Texture comes into play with art, design, food, fashion, and the list goes on. So how exactly has this come about? Why is texture and layers more appealing than something more free flowing?

Here are some things I’ve discovered about the inclusion of texture in the various fields I work in

In fashion

The concept of layering textures isn’t new in fashion, however, it is being emphasized more today. Layering has been incorporated into clothing, footwear, and even jewelry. Layered pieces allow you to express your sense of style, especially since fast fashion means everyone wears the same clothes. It gives you the opportunity to make your outfit look unique and well thought out. Sometimes even the appearance of texture, like with my wearable art pieces makes your look stand out.

In interiors

Texture is more freely incorporated into interior design without us every really paying attention to it. Think about it this way, your floors, walls, ceiling, and furniture pieces most likely aren’t the same color and texture. We layer when it comes to our interiors. The use of rugs, carpets, paintings, décor, mirrors, drapes, etc. All work towards creating a variety of textures indoors. When in doubt about your home’s interiors, add some elements of texture and notice the difference it makes.

In art

One of the earliest ways artists experimented with texture was through a process known as impasto. Thick layers of paint were used to give the appearance of texture to the painting. It emphasizes marks left by the artist that give the piece its character. Artists also play around with lighting with textured pieces. Every angle of light reflects differently and can change the look of the painting. A top lit textured piece will look quite different to one lit from below.

Likewise, I also work with many textures when creating my pieces. I work with mixed media and so you will see wood stains, rocks, spoons, scrapers, and many other things incorporated into the pieces for a unique look. Have a look at my Mixed Media Collection to understand the difference texture can make.

I’m Anthony Boone, a Jersey City based artist who has been working with mixed media for a while now. I’ve worked on creating paintings, sculptures, and even wearable art.  You can contact me here for any information or queries.
